  • cold and frosty morning after Kemble
  • Some of the Guys at Fredericksburg were asking about precautions we take. Here's my regular flying pal Paul. For long over-water trips we have full immersion dry suits with an insulation suit underneath that. We have head coverage so that the only bit of skin exposed in the water would be eyes, nose and mouth. The suit stays zipped up and we always wear life preservers with lights and a utility belt with radio, ELT and other stuff. We carry a fully sealable Winslow raft ( bought from Mike Perry on Guernsey) that can double as a tent if we come down in the mountains...
  • So with some serious survival kit on board and the benefit of ditching practice we take G-OOJP on flights like this one from Edinburgh and along the 56th parallel to Esbjerg then turning towards Lolland Falster in the very south of Denmark. Here we are making our way back.
  • And Denmark has a lot of interesting airfields and nearby sights. This field was challenging, a bit damp, soft and slippery. On the other hand the effort allowed a visit to Egeskov Slot
  • Egeskov Slot, a fantastic grand country castle house built on hundreds of oak tree trunks driven down into the ground as piles. Nowhere in Denmark is far above the water table...
  • Egeskov Slot....and the last thing I expected to find there was a Starfighter in a barn among a collection of cars and bikes
  • Egeskov Slot. The owners display a huge collection of 'everyday' items from its opulent past inclusing toys like this early monoplane.

  • A mild and bright winter's day sees us heading north in G-OOJP to Dornoch to the grass field amid the golf courses with the threat of snow showers ahead
  • Snow showers appear rapidly as we approach Dornoch with the cloud base falling below five hundred feet as I turn base

  • Isn't it worth the flight? 2014 and a few days into the New Year. Dornoch at night, atmospheric and very cold as everyone else is indoors
  • The Dornoch Castle Hotel displays ( and has an extensive cellar as well) a wonderfully rich selection of whiskys to the arriving pilot/golfer/traveller just waiting to take the edge off that cold feeling
