  • Short final to Fair Isle
  • G-OOJP crossing the threshold at Fair Isle. The surrounding terrain is steep and it can be turbulent. The main hazard appears to be large seabirds that rise and swoop beneath you. That hill in the back ground rises quite steeply. The chevron painted on the grass is nearly vertical.
  • G-OOJP short final into Mull. Mull is only half an hour from Edinburgh. The Glenforsa hotel, midfield on the left in the pic has a long tradition of aviation. The owner had his own ex-war bird(s) and there are all sorts of pics on the walls. Pleasant place to spend an hour or two watching the maritime and aviation world go by.
  • Why do we fly? Less than five minutes walk from G-OOJP. Getting off the beaten track. Light aircraft get you quickly to areas of undisturbed natural beauty.
  • G-OOJP short final at Barra, one of the few sand runways in the world that have scheduled air services. That'll be left turn on the climb out after the go-around!

  • Fingal's cave. These basaltic columns appear man-made. Sandwiched between layers of less spectacular rock, the columns have been eroded by the Atlantic Ocean to form caves - natural cathedrals that Gaudi would have been proud of !
  • and this is Guernsey seen from FL090. France forms the horizon at the top. Jersey is top right. ASG are the European Commander experts - efficient, thorough and neat with it. They are based at the field on Guernsey. Need a component? I guess this is a good place to start your search.
  • Head of Loch Fyne. In these parts the mountains reach up about three thousand feet or so above the nearby sea. It's rare that we have wall to wall blue skies. So you fly through broken cloud with glimpses of hidden beauty like this valley framed by cloud and partly lit by sunlight. Another reason to fly :-)
  • Seen from G-OOJP. this is Mont St Michel, a small medieval town sitting on a rocky outcrop. The tide races in and out a couple of times each day. Walt Disney's family came from the countryside nearby. I always wondered if this place inspired his ideal magic castles that have been built in the disney theme parks and as opening graphics in the movies.

  • RW 31 approach into the Faroe islands LOC DME NDB in G-OOJP. This is a tricky place. Just to the left of the shot is a ridge that is at right angles to the brisk atlantic winds. The ocean surface beyond the runway is a couple of hundred feet down. The effect is that you can encounter downdrafts of 2000' a minute after take-off and more if the conditions are right.
